HANOVER, N.H. - After having its 13-match winning streak snapped a night earlier, the Navy squash team bounced back with a pair of shutout victories over MIT and Tufts on Saturday in the second day of the Dartmouth Fall Classic in Hanover, N.H. Navy now stands 15-1 this season and is just one win off last year's total.
"I think we did a good job of bouncing back after losing to a fine Dartmouth team last night," said ninth-year Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "You are never sure if there will be lingering effects, however, I think we were back on our game today. The Tufts team was definitely a solid opponent for us."
Junior Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) not only picked up a pair of wins, he earned his 50th collegiate win by handing MIT's George Pratt a 9-2, 9-0, 9-0 setback at the No. 3 position. Mantica is one of four players on the Navy roster with at least 50 career wins.
At 15-1, senior Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) owns more wins than any other Navy player this season. Beautyman Jr earned a 9-1, 9-0, 9-1 victory over Joseph DeRosa of MIT and followed up with a 9-1, 9-1, 9-1 decision over Tufts' William Salisbury at No. 8.
Sophomore Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) easily cruised to victory over MIT's John Kucharczyk, giving up just one point in a 9-1, 9-0, 9-0 win. However, Tufts' Brian Rassel challenged Seidel in the opening game of their match, pushing him to the limit with Seidel coming out on top in game one, 10-9. Seidel, though, had little trouble after that, sweeping Rassel, 9-0, 9-0.
Playing his first season with the varsity squad, sophomore Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y.) continues to shine as the Mids' No. 9 player. After winning his match against MIT by default, he didn't surrender a point in his 3-0 win over Eli Borek of Tufts.
Finally, team captain Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) continues his outstanding leadership on the court, turning in a pair of wins at the No. 6 slot. He opened the day with a 9-2, 9-6, 9-0 win over MIT's Robert Habib before putting away Josh Levinson of Tufts, 9-0, 9-4, 9-6.
Navy will close out the weekend with a 10:00 am contest at Connecticut College on Sunday.
