ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy squash team remains unbeaten after opening the Navy Round Robin with a 9-0 victory over Virginia Friday afternoon at the Halsey International Squash Courts. After posting a 3-0 record last weekend in California, the Mids are now 4-0 with four matches on tap for Saturday.
New to this week's lineup were rookie Clayton Young (River Forest, Ill.) and senior Will Pappas (Philadelphia, Pa.). Young picked up a win in his first collegiate appearance by posting a 9-4, 9-7, 9-1 victory over Virginia's Mark Batten. Meanwhile, Pappas fought his way back into the mix after spending his junior year among the JV. He defeated Whit Sibley at the No. 9 spot, 9-2, 9-0, 9-0, in his first varsity appearance since 2006.
Senior Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) looked as though he would cruise through his match against Clark Bristow without giving up a point, as he took the first two games, 9-0, 9-0. Bristown, however, surprised Beautyman Jr by taking game three, 9-7. Beautyman Jr would take the fourth game to win the match, 3-1.
Meanwhile, senior team captain Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) tacked on a 3-0 win over David Whelan to push his career record to 55-28, owning the most wins on the team.
Navy opens competition on Saturday at 8:30 am against North Carolina, followed by matches against Georgetown (11:00 am), Washington & Lee (1:30 pm) and Vanderbilt (4:00 pm).
