Final Stats WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Navy men's swimming and diving team tallied wins in 13 events Thursday night as the Midshipmen posted a 214.5-85.5 victory over Army at Crandall Pool in West Point.
Navy has now defeated the Black Knights in 18 consecutive meets.
"What a great team effort," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "Yes, there were some individual outstanding times, but I am most impressed with how collectively everyone swam so well. This team rose to the challenge put before them and had a terrific night."
Navy opened the meet with wins in the first four events. Navy's 200 medley relay team of Andrew Hetzner, Ari Molina, Adam Meyer and Alex Oldenkamp set a new Army-Navy meet record and Navy school record by winning the event with a time of 1:30.41. Erik Hunter followed with a dominating victory in the 1650 freestyle. His winning time of 15:27.49, the second-fastest mark in Navy history to his own standard, won him the event by 26 seconds.
Mac Anthony followed by leading a 1-2-3 Navy finish in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 1:38.64. The Mids went then 1-2 in the 100 backstroke with Hetzner winning the event in a time of 49.82 and Billy Vey placing second.
Army picked up its first win of the night when James McLaughlin posted a time of 56.01 to win the 100 breaststroke. The Meyer brothers then put together a great showing in the 200 butterfly. Older brother Adam won the race in a time of 1:43.05, a clocking that is a Navy record, Army-Navy meet record and an NCAA B cut qualifying time. Younger brother Mark placed second in the event with a time of 1:47.91. After Oldenkamp (20.74), Joe Unruh and Alex Buck placed first, second and third, respectively, in the 50 free, the Mids entered the diving break holding a 94-37 lead.
Navy's Jon Galinski totaled 329.80 points to win the one-meter diving event, then Oldenkamp and teammate Aaron Aiken tied for the win in the 100 free with a time of 45.22. After Hetzner made it a personal sweep of the backstroke events as he won the 200 back with a time of 1:49.64, McLaughlin recorded his second win of the night with a clocking of 2:03.61 in the 200 breaststroke.
Despite the Army win in the event, the results of the race allowed Navy to take a 148-59 advantage and place the Mids only three points away of securing the overall meet victory. Hunter picked up the needed points in style as he set a new meet record of 4:27.46 in winning the 500 freestyle. His win, as well as second and fourth-place showings from his teammates, gave Navy an insurmountable 163-63 lead.
Army's Brody Blickle garnered the win in the 100 fly before Galinski won the three-meter springboard with an Army-Navy meet record score of 378.50 points.
The last individual event of the night was the 200 individual medley and Adam Meyer broke a slew of records with his clocking of 1:45.16. In addition to winning the event by seven seconds over teammate Vey, his time was a new Army-Navy meet record, a Navy school record, a Crandall Pool record, a Patriot League record and an NCAA B cut qualifying time.
Navy closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:01.37. Combining for the win was the foursome of Mac Anthony, Alex Buck, Aiken and Oldenkamp.
The Mids return to competition Tuesday evening when Navy plays host to Maryland in a 4 p.m. meet in Lejeune Hall.
