WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Navy women's swimming and diving team set four meet records and won 14 of 16 events on its way to posting a 211-84 victory over the Army, Thursday evening at Crandall Pool in West Point.
Navy has now defeated the Black Knights in 20 consecutive meets.
"It was a great night," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "Everybody gets up for this meet. We were happy that we were able to perform at the level we did.
"I am especially happy for our senior class. It's a lot of pressure to carry on what has been accomplished by our teams in the past, but they did a great job of helping lead us to the win tonight."
The Mids started off the meet by winning the opening seven events. After the foursome of Jennie Spencer, Mallory Dietrich, Brooke Besche and Thuy-Mi Dinh posted a winning time of 1:47.40 in the 200 medley relay, team captain Erika Hubbard recorded a time of 10:33.48 to win the 1000 freestyle by eight seconds.
"Erika's swim was huge," said Morrison. "She really set the tone for the evening with not just the win, but the time and her effort."
Tara Chapmon then took to the pool for Navy and set a new Army-Navy meet record in winning the 200 free in a time of 1:49.26. Chapmon edged Army's Corrie Payne by 1.6 seconds to win the event.
The Navy winning streak continued as Spencer (59.23) led a 1-2-3 sweep for Navy in the 100 backstroke, Dietrich won the 100 breaststroke by four seconds with a time of 1:04.34, Cate Sheerin (2:09.24) and Tessa Snow (2:10.41) finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 fly, and Dinh set a new meet and Crandall Pool record with a winning time of 22.97 in the 50 freestyle.
Army picked up its first win of the night when Lindsey Adao won the one-meter springboard diving event with a score of 254.50. That was followed, however, by Ranzau winning the 100 freestyle (52.62), Spencer leading a 1-2-3 Navy finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.09, and Dietrich winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 2:21.51.
Chapmon made it two meet records in as many events on the evening as she established a new Army-Navy -- and Crandall Pool -- record of 4:56.76 in winning the 500 freestyle by three seconds over Ranzau. Her effort was followed by Dietrich winning her third event of the night, the 100 butterfly, with a time of 56.78.
"Tara, Mallory and Thuy-Mi have led us all season and tonight was no exception," said Morrison. "They swim their best when we really need them to."
Desiree' Robison, who placed second to Adao on the one meter, totaled 260.90 points to win the three-meter competition. The last individual event of the evening was the 200 individual medley race, which was won by Army's Paige Brink in a time of 2:09.08. Navy then closed the meet by having its 400 freestyle relay team of Dinh, Ranzau, Lauren Milliron and Chapmon post a winning and meet-record time of 3:29.58.
Navy, 9-0 on the season, will resume its competitive season in early January.
