PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The seventh-ranked Penn squash team handed No. 12 Navy just its second loss of the 2008-09 campaign, as the Quakers earned a 9-0 victory over the Mids Thursday evening at Penn's Ringe Courts in Philadelphia. The win marked the ninth in a row by the Quakers over the Midshipmen.
"We had some good individual efforts," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "But they were a little too talented for us."
Penn won seven of the nine matches by 3-0 counts, as Navy pushed the Quakers to extra games just twice. Navy's No. 1 player Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) looked to have secured a win after winning the opening two games, 9-6, 9-5, against Penn junior Mark Froot. However, Froot inched his way back into the match by winning games three and four, 9-5 and 9-2, respectively, to force a fifth and deciding match. It was Froot who would pull off the miraculous come-from-behind win to take the No. 1 slot in five.
At the No. 4 position, Penn senior Andrew Zimmerman took game one, 9-7, before Navy sophomore Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) knotted the match with a 9-6 win in the second game. Zimmerman went on to win the match in four.
The Mids will be back in action on Friday when they face Haverford at 5:00 pm.
