HAVERFORD, Pa. - A day after being shut out by No. 7 Penn, the 12th-ranked Navy squash team bounced back by staging a 9-0 shut out of its own over Haverford on the road. Navy won all nine matches in three games en route to improving to 17-2 on the year, one more win than it recorded a year ago.
Navy senior Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) dispatched Haverford senior Evan Stiegel at the No. 1 position in what would be one of five wins in which Navy would not relinquish a point. Sophomore Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) beat rookie Zef Konst, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 at No. 2, while senior Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) (No. 4), sophomore Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) (No. 5) and junior Justin Langan (St. Louis, Mo.) (No. 7) also held their foes without a point.
Senior Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) took a step closer to 20 wins this season when he captured victory No. 17 with a 9-1, 9-2, 9-0 win over rookie Robert Thompson. Beautyman's 17 wins this season are a personal high, improving upon his 16 wins as a sophomore. Meanwhile, team captain Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) picked up a 9-0, 9-1, 9-0 victory against senior Karan Shah en route to posting his 65th-collegiate win, the most by any player on the team.
With final exams set to begin at the end of the week and the holidays on the horizon, the Midshipmen will take a step away from competition for the next month. Navy will be back in action Jan. 14 when it travels to Washington, D.C. to battle George Washington.
