CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The 13th-ranked Navy squash team earned a hard-fought 7-2 victory over Bowdoin Friday morning in the first round of the 2008 College Squash Association Team Championship held at Harvard University. The Mids, who dropped a 6-3 decision to the Polar Bears during the regular season, will now play the winner of the Rochester-Williams match in the second round on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

"We started off the weekend on a good note by beating Bowdoin," said eighth-year Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "It was a very close match that featured several hard-fought matches. We had some players step up and perform today to help push us through to the next round."

The top half of Navy's ladder has been strong all season and today was no exception. Senior Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.), who missed the match against Bowdoin on Jan. 19, kicked things off by easily handling Polar Bear senior Jacob Sack, 9-2, 9-3, 9-5. Navy sophomore Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) earned a three-game sweep over Palmer Higgins for the second time this season, giving up just one point in the win. Senior captain Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) turned in a 3-1 victory over David Funk, while rookie Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) dropped his opening game to Andy Bernard before winning the next three for the match win.

Second-year standout Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.), who dropped a three-gamer to Andy Bernard in the first meeting, came back to post an 8-10, 9-2, 9-7, 9-7 win over Ray Carta on Friday at the No. 7 slot. Meanwhile, senior Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.), who also sought to avenge an earlier loss to the Polar Bears, earned a 3-0 victory over Bowdoin sophomore Thai Ha-ngoc. Though only a three-gamer, all three were maxed out at 10 points, as Hamilton earned wins by 10-8, 10-9 and 10-8. Junior Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) earned a 3-0 victory at the No. 9 position over Rob Lynn, 9-1, 9-2, 9-6.
