RICHMOND, Va. - Navy men's cross country runner Matthew Leyndyke (Sr./Traverse City, Mich.) finished eighth overall to lead a youthful Midshipmen squad to a second-place finish in the 5k Richmond Invitational on a muggy Saturday morning.
Host Richmond won the meet with 23 points, followed by Navy's 55 points and Virginia Commonwealth's 57 points. In addition to the three teams, several Richmond alumni runners participated in the race.
"I am not pleased with our performance today," stated Navy head coach Al Cantello. "It was a good opportunity for our plebes to begin their transition to collegiate racing."
Leyndyke finished in 15:47, with four of his teammates finishing within five places of him. Robert Alvarado (So./San Francisco, Calif.) placed 10th with a time of 15:54, followed by Ken Bunnell's (Fr./St. Johnsbury, Vt.) 11th-place clocking of 15:55, Aaron Foote's (So./Niagara Falls, N.Y.) time of 15:56 for 12th place and Matthew De Villers (So./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) in 13th place courtesy of a 15:59 showing.
The Midshipmen will return to action next Saturday when they head up to Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., for the Fordham Invitational. Race time is slated for 11:45 a.m.
