CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Seven of the eight members of the Navy tennis team posted at least one victory this weekend at the UNC Fall Invitational held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

"We were challenged by the competition at the tournament, but still had one semifinalist and three additional quarterfinalists in singles and had one doubles team advance to the semifinals," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We have faced some great teams and individuals this fall, but we feel it will really help us as the season goes on."

The Navy results were highlighted by Zach Nicolson (Fr., Bowie, Md.) advancing to the semifinals of the D flight in singles and the tandem of Nick Birger (So., Belleville, Ill.) and Jason Hill (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) reaching the semifinal round of the B flight in doubles.

Nicholson opened the tournament by posting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chris Spalding from Elon, then rallied to win a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 quarterfinal round match against Chris Armes from James Madison. Nicholson's run was halted by a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Jesse Hutchison from Charlotte.

Also advancing to the championship side of their respective brackets in singles were Hill at the B-2 flight, Ramsey Lemaich (Jr., Danville, Calif.) at the C-1 flight and Birger at the C-2 flight.

In the doubles portion of the tournament, Birger and Hill won a 9-8 (7-5) decision over East Carolina's Bryan Oakley and Stephen Whitwell in the opening round, then won an 8-3 contest over Michael Kolchecki and Yufo Sutanito from The Citadel. The Navy duo would see its tournament end with an 8-3 loss to Marcos Chiaretti and Kurt Gattiker from North Florida in the semifinal round.

Birger and Hill both posted overall records of 3-2 at the tournament, while Owen Bullard (So., Concord, N.C.) tallied an overall mark of 3-1.

Navy's season will resume in just under two weeks when the Mids play host to the second Navy Invitational of the fall, Oct. 11-13 at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
