BRONX, N.Y. - Navy men's cross country team captain Bill Prom (Sr./New Berlin, Wis.) finished third overall to guide the Midshipmen to a first-place performance at the 16-team Fordham Invitational on Saturday morning in Van Cortlandt Park.
The Midshipmen owned five of the 11-best times to produce a team score of 29 points, 67 fewer than second-place Quinnipiac's 96 points. Williams finished third with 97 points, followed by DePaul's 103 points and Pittsburgh's 129 points to round out the top-five teams.
"We were supposed to run as a pack, win and we did," stated Navy head coach Al Cantello. "Our top-five runners were separated by less than 16 seconds. That's the story."
Prom completed the 8k race in 26:55.45, marking the first time in his career that he led the Midshipmen across the finish line. Andrew Hanko (So./Montville, N.J.), Matthew De Villers (So./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and Ricky Griffith (Jr./Piedmont, Calif.) immediately followed Prom across the finish line. Hanko finished in 26:55.74 for fourth place, De Villers landed in fifth place with his 26:56.04 clocking and Griffith placed sixth with a 26:56.36 showing.
Matt Leyndyke (Sr./Traverse City, Mich.) rounded out the scoring five with a time of 27:10.44. Last week at the Richmond Invitational, Leyndyke produced the team's best time, good for a 10th-place score.
The Midshipmen will return to action next Saturday when it hosts the Navy Invitational at the USNA Cross Country Course. Race time is slated for 11 a.m.
