Mids Split on First Day of Navy Open

Sept. 6, 2008

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 10th-ranked Navy water polo team split on the opening day of the Navy Open, topping Fordham, 15-6, in the first game before falling to top-ranked Cal, 13-4, in the nightcap.

"We had a strong performance in the first game against Fordham, but in the second game, we had a clinic run on us by California," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "It was what the doctor ordered for us. We found some things that we need to work on and get better at. It was an impressive performance by them.

"The good thing was that we were competitive and didn't back down from them," said Schofield. "We have a lot of progress to make and we are looking forward to tomorrow already."

Statistics weren't made available at time of release.

The Mids will battle Concordia (Calif.) at 12:10 pm and then 12th-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.) at 3:40 pm on Sunday. Both games will be played in Lejeune Hall.
