PALMYRA, Pa. -- The fifth-ranked Navy rifle team continued its unbeaten season on Sunday, defeating Akron, 4587 to 4489, in the Palmyra Tournament. The win improved Navy's record to 12-0.
"Lisa Kunzelman continues to shoot strong scores and she has posted strong back-to-back performances," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "She is probably top five in the tournament in both disciplines. She had a good day."
However, Navy's team scores on Sunday were a little off.
"Both guns were off today. I think we shot our lowest score of the season," said Kelley. The Mids' previous low was the 4596 shot yesterday against Coast Guard. "We need to start pulling it together, especially tomorrow against Alaska. That will be a good indication of where we are and we need a good performance."
Navy won the smallbore discipline, 2265 to 2246. Kunzelman led Navy with a 575. Alison Lankes follwed with a 569. Kenan Wang and Chris Burleson scored a 563 and a 558, respectively, to round out Navy's scoring.
The Mids then topped the Zips, 2322 to 2243, in air rifle to complete the sweep. Kunzelman led the way with a 588. Alex Karacsonyi followed with a 584. Lankes shot a 583 and Burleson tallied a 577.
Navy will host Alaska, the defending national champions, at the Bancroft Rifle Range, beginning at 2:30 pm.
