PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The fifth-ranked Navy rifle team recorded a 4622 to defeat the University of the Sciences on Saturday morning. The victory improves Navy's overall record to 14-1 overall. USP's score was not available at time of release.
"Our performance was a significant improvement over the last two weeks and the whole semester," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We are heading in the right direction. I finally picked the right people in smallbore and it paid off."
The Mids' score of 4622 was the team's highest since firing a 4623 against MIT on Oct. 12. Navy scored a 2290 in smallbore, the team's second-highest tally of the season, and then totaled a 2332 in air rifle.
In smallbore, Chris Burleson led the Mids with a 579. Kenan Wang had a 573, Alex Karacsonyi recorded a 571 and Lisa Kunzelman tallied a 567.
"I was really pleased with the way Kenan Wang stepped up today," said Kelley. "He produced a really solid score for us. He also had a strong score in air rifle that didn't count, so we had a pretty good day."
The Mids recorded an impressive performance in air rifle as Kunzelman and Karacsonyi tallied 590s each. Alison Lankes recorded a 577 and Burleson scored a 575.
"Alex (Karacsonyi) and Lisa (Kunzelman) really led the way for us in air rifle," said Kelley. "We look for that from them as they are seniors and when they shoot well, it helps our other shooters."
Navy will be off until Feb. 7, when it travels to West Point to face Army in the Star Match, beginning at 9:00 am.
