Navy Swimming Teams Post Season-Opening Wins

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams successfully opening their 2009-10 seasons by posting a pair of victories over George Mason and Loyola, Saturday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis. The Navy men's team recorded a 164-125 win over George Mason and a 161-109 victory over Loyola. In the women's meet, the Mids tallied a 166-129 win over the Patriots and a 210-85 victory over the Greyhounds.

"I was very happy with the energy and output of our team today," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "Everyone dropped time from our team scrimmage held last week. They raced very well."

"It is great to get the season going on such a positive note," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "We had a nice mix of success from returning and new swimmers. This was a good performance for us to build upon."

Both Navy programs saw a trio of its respective athletes record multiple individual event victories on the day, with the men's team totaling nine event wins and the women posting eight victories. Additionally, both programs won the two relay events contested on the day.

Winning a pair of individual events on the day for the Navy men's team were Mac Anthony (So., Allentown, Pa.), Adam Meyer (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) and Olaf Olson (Jr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.). Anthony won the 200 and 400 freestyle events, Meyer picked up wins in both butterfly events and Olson swept the two diving boards.

On the women's side, Navy's Thuy-Mi Dinh (Sr., Anaheim, Calif.), Tara Chapmon (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Toni Paruso (Fr., Savannah, Ga.) all were victorious in a pair of individual events. Dinh swept the two sprint freestyle races, Chapmon won the 400 and 800 freestyle events and Paruso won the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly contests.

Additional Mids to come away with a victory on the day were Andrew Hetzner (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) in the 100 backstroke, Alex Buck (Jr., Lisle, Ill.) in the 50 freestyle, Patrick Veltman (Jr., Midlothian, Va.), in the 200 individual medley, Allison Ranzau (Jr., Alpharetta, Ga.) in the 200 freestyle and Kellie Darmody (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) in the 200 backstroke.

Both Navy teams will return to Lejeune Hall Friday night for a doubleheader against Johns Hopkins. The women's teams from the respective programs will compete against each other starting at 5 p.m., with the men's meet to follow at 7:15 p.m.
