PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Junior Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.) and sophomore Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) each carded a 4-over par 75 in the final round to lead the Navy golf team to an 11th-place finish at the 17-team Philadelphia Big Five Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. The Mids shaved a stroke off their first round score, pairing rounds of 308 and 307 to finish 47-over (615) alongside Boston College (309-306).

Campbell saved its best for last as it turned in the tournament's low round on Sunday (290, +6), charging up from second to take a four-stroke advantage over Richmond to earn the team title with a 19-over par 587 (297-290). Richmond dropped to second with a 23-over par 591 (293-298), followed by Yale in third (594, +26) and Penn and Binghamton tied for fourth with a 32-over par 600.

Meanwhile, Navy and Boston College finished just a stroke behind 10th-place St. John's (614, +46) and two strokes out of ninth taken by Villanova (613, +45).

"This was an extremely challenging, championship golf course that we played on this weekend," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "I thought we played pretty well on both days, but the greens are exceptionally difficult, fast and sloping. It's difficult to prepare for a course like this, however in our case, I?felt it important to play and learn from it as it is very similar to what we will play next April at the Patriot League Championship. I?consider this experience as a great teaching tool in preparing our team for the prize at the end of the season."

Hayes was Navy's top placewinner, turning in a 9-over par 151 (76-75) to finish tied for 27th. Meanwhile, Reilly's 4-over par 75 helped move him from 58th to a tie for 39th with a two-round 12-over par 154 (79-75). Sophomore Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) finished among the top 50 golfers with a 13-over par 155 (78-77) to tie for 46th, while second-year standout Collier Jones (Little Rock, Ark.) fell from 21st to 46th after posting a 9-over par 80 in the final round for a two-round mark of 155 (+13). Rounding things out for Navy was senior Michael Harrigan (Moorestown, N.J.) who placed 82nd with a 25-over par 167.

The Mids will close out the fall season next weekend when they head to Bedminster, N.J. to take part in the Seton Hall Invitational.
