WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Army's Ariana Mankus and Fabiola Castro combined for 28 kills and just one hitting error to lead Army to a three-set victory over Navy, Saturday night at Gillis Field House in West Point, N.Y. The Black Knights won the Star Match between the teams by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-16.
"We couldn't stop Army's outside hitters tonight," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We had a ton of deflections, but couldn't get any blocks out of them."
Army (7-0 Patriot League) was able to go on sizeable runs in the middle part of each of the three sets to pull away from Navy (1-6 Patriot League). A 10-4 run gave the Black Knights a 22-14 lead in the opening set, a 12-2 run allowed Army to take a 21-11 lead in the second set and an 8-4 run allowed the Black Knights to build a 21-13 lead in the third set.
Army held advantages over Navy in kills (46-29), hitting percentage (.373-.117) and blocks (6-1).
Meghan Carpenter (So., Frederick, Md.) talled nine kills to lead the Navy offense, while Holly Berger (So., Claremont, Calif.) hauled in a match-high 17 digs.
Mankus totaled 16 kills and one error on 34 swings for an attack percentage of .441, while Castro tallied 12 kills and no errors on 20 attempts for a percentage of .600.
Navy will play host to Lafayette Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
