Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- American's middle blocker tandem of Claire and Ann Recht combined for 15 kills and a .565 hitting percentage to help the Eagles post a three-set victory over the Navy volleyball team, Thursday night at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. The Eagles defeated the Midshipmen by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-12.

"American played well tonight," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We ran into a team in playoff form. There were parts tonight where we led, and parts where we let the door open. American was able to run successive points on us a number of times."

The start of the match couldn't have gone much better for Navy (1-9 Patriot League). After scoring the first three points of the match, the Mids soon built a 13-10 lead. American (7-3) answered with a 10-0 run to take a 20-13 advantage. Navy was able to pull to within as few as five points several times before the Eagles closed out the set.

Navy again had a strong start to the second set, taking early leads of 4-1 and 6-3. American would soon pull in front of the Mids at 8-7 before taking a 13-11 lead. At that point the Eagles scored four consecutive points to extend its lead to 17-11. After a Navy kill, American went on another 4-0 run to build a 21-12 advantage.

The third set saw Navy hold a slim 5-4 lead until American ran off six straight point to take a 10-5 advantage. Navy closed to within three points at 12-9 before the Eagles scored six of the ensuing seven points to build an 18-10 lead.

American as a team posted a hitting percentage of .378 on the night, while Navy finished with a mark of -.023. The Eagles held a narrow advantage in digs, 30-28, but also held a sizeable lead of 10-4 over the Mids in blocks.

Meghan Carpenter (So., Frederick, Md.) and Krista Eschelman (Sr., Germantown, Md.) both tallied six kills to pace the Navy offense.

Ann Recht finished the match with nine kills and a .615 attack percentage, while her sister posted six kills and an attack percentage of .500. Leading all players in kills on the night was American's Angelina Waterman with 13 kills.

Navy will close the home portion of its season next weekend with matches Nov. 6 against Army (7 p.m.) and Nov. 7 against Holy Cross (2 p.m.). Both matches will be played in the Wesley A. Brown Field House on The Yard.
