HAMILTON, N.Y. - Paced by Brigid Byrne's (Fr./Vienna, Va.) ninth-place performance, the Navy women's cross country team placed third out of eight teams at the Patriot League Championship on Saturday afternoon at Colgate's Harry Lang Cross Country Course.

Bucknell won the league title with a team score of 65 points to finish ahead of Army's 81 points and Navy's 87 points. Host Colgate placed four with 114 points, followed Holy Cross's 135 points, Lafayette's 138 points, Lehigh's 143 points and American's 145 points.

"Bucknell and Army were the better teams today," stated Navy head coach Karen Boyle. "Our girls all gave 100 percent, but they just happened to be faster."

Byrne led the Midshipmen and all Patriot League freshmen across the finish line with a 6,000-meter time of 23:22.5 to earn the league's rookie-of-the-year award and second-team all-league distinction. She is the second Navy runner to claim the honor since joining the league in 2003, as Kyleigh Millhouse first received the recognition in 2004.

"Brigid has been steady for us all season," said Boyle. "I'm really proud of her. She is a team runner that is all about us."

Anna Bernal (Sr./Bonaire, Ga.) produced the team's second-best time, 16th overall, with a time of 23:56.4. Lexa Gass (Sr./Crescent, Pa.) placed 19th with a 24:08.0 showing, followed by Jess Palacio's (So./Sun Valley, Nev.) 21st-place time of 24:12.4 and Amy Watson's (Sr./Hampstead, Md.) 22nd-place clocking of 24:14.4 to round out Navy's scoring five.

The Midshipmen will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 14, when they head to Princess Anne, Md., for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championship.
