ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy squash team turned in a trio of sweeps over Virginia, North Carolina and Georgetown Friday and Saturday to start the 2009-10 campaign 3-0. A year ago, the Mids won their first 13 matches by way of sweeps en route to setting a school record for wins with 27.

Junior Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) anchored the Navy charge from the No. 1 position, including an 11-2, 11-3, 11-4 victory over Virginia's James Patterson, who is the highest ranked player among the three Navy opponents. Lutz now owns a 53-17 career record and is among the top 10 in career wins under Craig Dawson's watch.

Senior Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.), who earned the No. 2 spot on the ladder by way of his Barb Tournament finish, swept all three opponents, but found his stiffest competition in the form of Patrick Trousdale. Mantica handled Trousdale 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 and has now won six straight matches dating back to last season's College Squash Association Team Championship. Additionally, Mantica is now tied with Class of `06 Scott Hackman for career wins (67) during Dawson's tenure.

Three freshmen made their debut as a member of the Navy squash team, as Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.), John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) and David Koenig (Cincinnati, Ohio) won all three matches. Koenig was pressured in his final match of the tournament, as Georgetown's Peter Fromson pushed him to four games. Koenig opened up with an 11-1 victory, however Fromson knotted up the match by taking game two, 11-7. Koenig came back to take games three and four, 11-5 and 11-7, to open his career 3-0.

On a side note, fans may notice the change in scoring this year. In past seasons, individuals needed to score nine points for the win, however, the college and junior ranks have adopted the international rule where games are played to 11. However, should the match reach a 10-10 tie, a player must win by 2, similar to the previous rule of an 8-all tie.

The Midshipmen will be back in action next week when they travel to Granville, Ohio to take part in the Denison Tournament. Navy opens play on Friday against the host Denison Big Red at 5:00 pm. The Mids battle ninth-ranked Western Ontario and Northwestern on Saturday and conclude with a Sunday morning contest against Kenyon.
