NORFOLK, Va. -- Freshman Emani Decquir reached the B-2 Flight finals at the Old Dominion Collegiate Invitational to lead the Navy women's tennis team to a strong showing in the three-day event. Singles play took place on Saturday and concluded today.
"I thought the tournament served its purpose for us," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "This weekend was exactly what we needed, because it really showed us what we need to work on, and we can move forward from this."
Decquir reached the B-2 Flight finals with three impressive victories. In the first round, she defeated NJIT's Dasa Stanimirovic, 6-3, 7-5. She then posted a dominant victory over Morgan State's Viktoriya Lukyanenko, 6-0, 6-0. In the semifinals, she topped Mary Washington's Kathryn Schafer, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (4).
Decquir finally fell in the finals to Howard's Brittney Morgan, 6-3, 6-2.
"Emani is a pretty confident player, but she wanted to prove to herself that she can play at a high level and she did that this weekend," said Puryear. "You could see her confidence growing with every match she plays, and it wears off on the team. Everyone on the team feeds off each other's successes, and picks each other up when things aren't going great. The confidence becomes contagious."
Stefanie Ton won a match in the C-3 Flight, while Julie Dias won her first match in the D-2 Flight.
Navy will be off next weekend, before hosting the Navy Blind Duals on Oct. 17-18, at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.
