Navy Rifle Shows Improvement In Second Day of MAC Tournament

Oct. 4, 2009

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy rifle team improved by 24 points from day one to cruise past seven other opponents during the second day of the season-opening MAC Tournament held at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. The Midshipmen fired a 4627 overall after shooting a 4603 on day one.

"We had much improvement from yesterday, and smallbore was much, much better," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "Having said that, we still need to get better there, but it is heading in the right direction."

Navy totaled a 2292 in smallbore with all scores being at least 571. Chris Burleson led the way with a 576. Kenan Wang scored a 574 and Ryan Williams and Liz Leckie shot a pair of 571s respectively.

Navy then tallied an impressive 2335 in the air rifle, led by Burleson's 587. Alison Lankes shot a 584, while Williams and Leckie were at 583 and 581, respectively.

"That is a really good sign having all four air rifle scores over 580. Its a good score, but I think we are capable of shooting better and becoming more consistent," said Kelley. "I thought Alison Lankes had a very good air rifle match. She missed nine points in her first 20 shots, but just seven points in her next 40. That is the kind of resiliency this team has. If they don't shoot well at the start, they fight a little harder and want to end well. We are not willing to give up points and as we push forward this year, that will come through big for us."

Navy will host a second two-day MAC Tournament next Saturday and Sunday at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
