Final Stats

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The two doubles tandems from the Navy men's tennis team each picked up victories in the main draw of the Cornell Fall Invitational held this weekend in Ithaca, N.Y.

In the first doubles flight, Navy's Nick Birger (Jr., Belleville, Ill.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Fr., Sarasota, Fla.) opened the tournament by posting an 8-5 victory over Dom Hemy and Ted Segerfore from Fairleigh Dickinson. The run for the Mids quickly came to an end, however, as an injury to Gutsche prevented the duo from competing in their next match.

Meanwhile, Jeremy New (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.) and Matt Richmond (Fr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) were entered into the second doubles flight for the Mids. After recording an 8-3 win over Sean Carr and Kyle Gerber from Case Western in the first round, the Mids posted an 8-2 win over Eric Rothstein and Mitch Zenaty from Buffalo in the round of 16. They would then drop an 8-4 decision to Mirza Kils and Charles Quay from Cornell in the quarterfinal round.

In the singles competition at the tournament, Richmond was the lone Mid to advance in the main draw. He won a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) contest over Niagara's Matt Kane in the first round before losing a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Evan Algier from Binghamton in a quarterfinal match.

Birger had the best results of the three Mids who would end up competing in their respective consolation draws. Birger posted an 8-4 win over Rafael Rodriguez of Binghamton in the first round, received a bye in the second round and won his semifinal match due to a default. He would then win the C flight's consolation draw by posting an 8-6 win over Zenaty.

"It was good to see Nick win the backdraw," said Navy assistant coach John Moreland. "The guys played well in the doubles, too. It was a good way for us to end our fall season."
