Men's Swimming & Diving Remains Undefeated

Nov. 21, 2009

HANOVER, N.H. -- The Navy men's swimming and diving team posted 11 event victories on its way to picking up a pair of wins over Brown and Dartmouth Saturday at Karl Michael Pool in Hanover, N.H. The Mids improved to 9-0 on the season with the 152-143 win over Brown and the 168-129 victory over Dartmouth.

"The guys swam and dove really tough today," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "I was pleased with the overall performance of everyone."

After Navy started the meet by placing third in the 200 medley relay, Navy swimmers claimed the top four spots in the 1000 freestyle. Erik Hunter (Jr., Placerville, Calif.) won the race with a time of 9:26.62, and he was followed by teammates Will Norton (So., Tyler, Texas) in second place (9:35.79), Sam Martinette (Jr., Richmond, Va.) in third (9:38.57) and Justin Vagts (Fr., Crofton, Md.) in fourth (9:39.82). Navy then placed first, second and third in the 200 freestyle. Picking up the win was Mac Anthony (So., Allentown, Pa.) in a time of 1:40.22, with Aaron Aiken (Jr., Ocala Fla.) finishing in second place (1:43.46) and J.J. Helms (Jr., Conroe, Texas) placing third (1:43.93).

Pete Donahue (Jr., Washington, D.C.) placed second for the Mids in the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 59.00, then Andrew Hetzner's (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) time of 51.97 in the 100 backstroke gave him the event victory by one-quarter of a second. The Navy trio of Adam Meyer (Sr., Bethesda, Md.), Steve Dukleth (So., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Mark Meyer (So., Bethesda, Md.) would follow with first, second and third-place showings, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. Adam Meyer's time of 1:50.12 won him the event, while Dukleth posted a time of 1:51.91 to place second over Mark Meyer by two-hundredths of a second.

Olaf Olson (Jr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) would be narrowly edged by Brown's C.J. Kambe for the win on the one-meter springboard. Kambe tallied 283.25 points to win the event, while Olson's score of 282.80 allowed him to place second.

The first half of the meet ended with John Tortorich (So., Metairie, La.) placing third in the 50 freestyle.

Navy would win each of the remaining six individual events contested during the meet. Aiken started the Navy run with his time of 46.14 in the 50 free, Hetzner followed with a clocking of 1:51.00 to win the 200 back, and Adam Meyer won the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.84.

Hunter and Norton then placed first and second in the 500 free with times of 4:35.22 and 4:42.14, Adam Meyer and Dukleth finished in first and second place in the 100 fly with marks of 50.32 and 50.77, and Mark Meyer won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:54.28.

Olson bounced back from his narrow defeat on the one meter with a dominating performance on the three meter. Olson's tally of 347.55 allowed him to top teammate and second-place finisher Ben Nicholas (So., Bothell, Wash.) by 57.55 points.

Navy closed out the meet by placing second in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Mids will next take to the pool for a competition Dec. 10 when Navy plays host to Army in Lejeune Hall.
