ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's swimming and diving team won 15 events and set eight records in posting a 236-64 victory over Army Thursday evening in Navy's Lejeune Hall.
The win was Navy's 19th in a row over Army.
"The opening 200 medley relay was a sign of things to come for us," said Navy men's swimming coach Bill Roberts. "I am very proud of the entire team. It would too hard to single out any one person, but I do have to give credit to our senior class for their leadership in helping us to this victory,"
The Mids began the meet by posting a new Navy, Lejeune Hall and Army-Navy Meet record in winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:42.05. Comprising the winning team for Navy was Andrew Hetzner (Sr., Riverside, Calif.), Andrew Utama (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.), Adam Meyer (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) and Aaron Aiken (Jr., Ocala, Fla.). That was followed by Justin Vagts (Fr., Crofton, Md.) setting a new meet record and attaining an NCAA B cut time in winning the 1500 freestyle in a time of 15:18.54, then Mac Anthony (So., Allentown, Pa.) established a new school, pool and meet record and posted an NCAA B cut qualifying time with his clocking of 1:48.12 in winning the 200 freestyle.
After Hetzner won the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.33, Pete Donahue (Jr., Washington, D.C.) won the 100 breaststroke in a new Navy, Lejeune Hall and Army-Navy Meet record time of 1:56.92. His effort was followed by Meyer's new meet record and NCAA B cut time of 1:56.92 in his 200 fly victory.
Aiken would win both sweep the two sprint freestyle events for the Mids, winning the 50 free in a time of 23.05 and the 100 free in a time of 50.57. The next event saw Sam Martinette (Jr., Richmond, Va.) win the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:01.24.
Meyer returned to the starting blocks for the next event and again established a new school, pool and meet record and NCAA B cut qualifying time of 2:11.13 in winning the 200 breaststroke. Anthony followed Meyer by winning his second event of the night, the 400 freestyle, in a meet record time of 3:55.24.
Navy's Olaf Olson (Jr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Ben Nicholas (So., Bothell, Wash.) would split the victories in the diving events for the Mids. Olson won the one meter with a score of 302.70, while Nicholas tallied 317.40 points in winning the three-meter competition.
The teams went into the second intermission after Army's Brody Blickle posted a time of 55.82 to win the 100 butterfly.
Navy returned to its winning ways when Meyer again set a new Navy, Lejeune Hall, and Army-Navy Meet record and NCAA B cut qualifying time in winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.23. The meet concluded with the Navy foursome of Anthony, Alex Buck (Jr., Lisle, Ill.), Aiken and Frank Komadina (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz.) winning the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.41.
"What the team displayed tonight was a culmination of all of our hard work since the summer," said team captain Komadina. "It goes to show what people can accomplish when motivated. I couldn't be prouder to be part of this team and the long line of Navy swimming brotherhood."
Navy, 10-0 on the season, will next compete January 9 at Maryland.
