ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy's Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.), Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) and Will Pappas (Philadelphia, Pa.) played their final home matches of their careers on Sunday and did so in record fashion. The three seniors led the Navy squash team to back-to-back 9-0 wins over Penn State and Lafayette and in doing so, the Mids tied the school record for single season wins, pushing their season record to 24-5. The 24 wins equal the record set in 2004-05 (24-7) under ninth-year head coach Craig Dawson's direction.
While Hartley and Pappas only played in the match against Penn State, all three seniors were in action for the record-tying match against Lafayette. Zipf earned a 9-0, 9-2, 9-0 victory over Molly Clark, while both Hartley and Pappas blanked their foes in three games. In fact, five Navy players won their matches against the Leopards without surrendering a point.
Seven players saw action in both matches on Sunday, while four others got in on one match. Sophomore standout Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) anchored the Mids' win over Penn State from the No. 1 position where he turned in a 9-4, 9-1, 9-2 win over junior Shaeel Khan. Meanwhile, Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) saw his only action of the day at the No. 2 slot where he posted a 9-1, 9-2, 9-4 victory over Nittany Lion rookie Alex Pizzutillo. Sophomore Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) also played in just one match and did so without breaking a sweat as he was on eof four players who produced 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 wins against PSU.
Navy newcomers Clayton Young (River Forest, Ill.) and John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.) continued to get extra matches this weekend, as both came away with a pair of wins. Young finished the weekend with a 3-0 record and gave up just two points in his three matches. Tracey, meanwhile, was also unbeaten this weekend and turned in 3-0 wins in both matches on Sunday.
The Midshipmen will be back in action next Saturday when they face host Hamilton College, along with St. Lawrence in hopes of breaking the school wins record. Navy will battle Hamilton College at 10:00 am in Clinton, N.Y., followed by a 4:00 pm matchup against St. Lawrence.
