BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh held the Navy women's basketball team to 23 percent shooting from the field in the second half to help the Mountain Hawks record a 66-48 victory over the Midshipmen, Wednesday night at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Mountain Hawks (18-6, 7-2 Patriot League) created some separation from the Mids (12-12, 5-4) with a pair of early second half runs. A Morgan Hill (Jr., Portales, N.M.) bucket pulled Navy to within three points at 36-33 with 16:40 showing on the clock. Lehigh promptly scored the next five points to take a 41-33 advantage. The margin would hover between five and seven points for awhile, including at 46-41 with just under nine minutes left to play. The Mountain Hawks would score the next seven points to take a 53-41 lead with 7:10 left to play.
Lehigh would hold a lead of at least 10 points over the remainder of the game.
"Lehigh has a very good starting five," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper. "The athleticism, shooting ability and inside game of that group gave us problems. They are a really solid group. They are a little taller than us, too, and that slowed down our inside game. We needed someone inside to make some baskets to take some of the pressure off of our perimeter players."
The Mids played the game without leading scorer and rebounder Cassie Consedine (So., Bartlesville, Okla.) due to an ankle injury.
Navy connected on 6-of-26 shots from the field in the second half, including just 1-of-5 shots from beyond the three-point arc, while Lehigh converted 11-of-29 attempts from the floor (37.9%) after halftime.
Angela Myers (So., San Antonio, Texas) had another all-around solid night for the Mids. She scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to notch her fourth double-double of the season, while adding a team-high six assists in the game. Joining her in reaching double figures in points was Kristin Bowen (Jr., Monroesville, N.J.) with 10 points.
Lehigh's Erica Prosser led all players in the game with 15 points.
Navy will return to the Lehigh Valley Saturday when the Midshipmen play at Lafayette in a 1 p.m. game.
