Final Stats
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team improved its record to 8-1 on the season by posting a pair of victories over St. Joseph's and George Mason Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids recorded 7-0 victories over both the Hawks and the Patriots to run their winning streak to four straight matches.
"We were excited by our results today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We were able to play all 16 of our players and still come away with a pair of 7-0 wins. Getting playing time for everyone, while winning, is a key for us at this time of year."
The doubles point between the Mids and the Hawks went down to the last match to finish. Navy would win the point when Owen Bullard (So., Concord, N.C.) and Ramsey Lemaich (Jr., Danville, Calif.) posted a 9-7 victory over Pat Adams and Matt Prusack at No. 2 doubles.
Navy then went on to win each of the six singles contests in straight sets. Bullard gave Navy its second point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Prusack. After Jason Hill (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) turned in a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot, Marcus Rebersak (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted a match-clinching 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles.
Lemaich, Jeremy New (So., Glen Valley, Va.), and Nate Nelms (Sr., St. Mary's Ga.) rounded out the singles competition by posting wins for Navy at the No. 4, No. 6 and No. 1 flights, respectively.
"Owen Bullard played outstanding for us against St. Joseph's," said Officer. "He and Ramsey clinched the doubles point for us with their 9-7 win at number two doubles, then he was the first off of the courts in singles."
Later in the day, the Mids won three relatively close doubles matches against the Patriots to claim the doubles point, then did not drop a set in winning six singles matches. The tightest match of the draw took place at No. 1 singles where Johnny Waters (Sr., Papillion, Neb.) recorded a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Brian Fitzgerald.
"Johnny was our player of the match against George Mason," said Officer.
Additionally against the Patriots, Hill won a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Jorge Osuna at No. 2 singles, Bullard lost just one game in defeating Dan Schneider at No. 3, Jared Teichman (Fr., Blue Bell, Pa.) posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Arjun Sanghvi at No. 5 and Chris Worosz (Fr., Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) tallied a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Matt Vaughn at No. 6. Competing the Navy sweep was Nick Birger (So., Belleville, Ill.), who led Jordan Lipstock, 6-3, 3-1 when Lipstock retired from the match.
Navy will take to the road for its next five matches. The road swing starts next weekend when the Mids play Feb. 21 at Yale and Feb., 22 at Penn.
