ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's club tennis team had a strong performance on Sunday, concluding MATA Sectionals with a 2-0 record on the final day and finishing 3-2 overall during the two-day tournament. With the victories, Navy improves to 4-3 overall.
The matches were scored in the World Team Tennis format. In this format, teams play ladies doubles, men's doubles, ladies singles, men's singles, and mixed doubles. For the first two rounds, which was pool play, matches were a four-game pro-set. In the last round, which was the gold round, which were being played to get into the main draw semi-finals, the players played a regular set.
"It was a great way to end the tournament with wins against two good teams. The players really pulled together all weekend to help ensure the success of the team, which was great to see," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear.
In the first match of the day, Navy pulled out an impressive 19-9 victory over Virginia Commonwealth. Brittney Boucher won the ladies' singles with a 4-1 victory over the Rams' Stevens. In the ladies' doubles portion, Julie Dias and Lindsay Olsen won 4-1 over Slader and Anderson. Lastly, in the mixed doubles, Dias and Mineur (men's team) won 4-1 over Guemmel and Stevens.
The Mids then pulled out a thrilling 15-13 victory over William & Mary in the final match of the tournament. In ladies' doubles, Dias and Olsen completed their perfect day with a 4-1 win over Yeh and Fitter. Boucher rallied for a 4-3 (5-2) win over Matson in ladies' singles. Smyth and Fitter defeated Dias and Mineur, 4-3, in mixed doubles.
We pulled out a couple of very tough matches today," said Puryear. "Brittney pulled out the match against William and Mary after being down 3-0. Coming back to win three straight games to force a tie-breaker, then finishing the match in the breaker in convincing fashion. Julie and Lindsay were dominant, losing only one game in their doubles matches today.
"All weekend long we showed the grit and spirit that I think exemplifies Navy athletics and the ladies tennis program," added Puryear.
The Navy women's club tennis team will host the UMBC Club team next Sunday at noon at the Tose Family Indoor Tennis Center.
