WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Navy squash players Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) and Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) were among 160 players who converged on the campus of Williams College to take part in the 2009 College Squash Association (CSA) Individual Championship held at the Simon Squash Courts on Friday. After the first day of action, both Navy players remain in the competition with Mattsson advancing in the Molloy Division main draw, while Lutz will continue on through the Molloy Division consolation bracket.
Mattsson received a first-round bye in the tournament but was met by a host favorite Cameron Henry in the round of 32. Henry, a senior at Williams, was turned back by Mattsson, 9-2, 9-4, 9-0. The Navy senior has had the hot hand in recent weeks for the Midshipmen, winning eight straight matches en route to a 24-6 record this winter.
Mattsson has found a great deal of success at the CSA Individual Championship in past years. In 2007, Mattsson defeated his teammate, Jeff Sawin, to win the Molloy Division crown in a five-game marathon match. Last year, he won his first two matches of the individual championship before losing back-to-back decisions to bow out of the tournament.
Mattsson will meet Franklin & Marshall newcomer Gabriel de Melo Saturday at 11:30 am. de Melo turned in a 3-2 decision over Lutz during the regular-season matchup two weeks ago.
Lutz, meanwhile, opened the tournament with a 9-6, 9-0, 9-1 win over Colgate's Rob McCrary before losing a heart-breaking five-game match to Western Ontario's No. 1 player, Chris Hanebury, who is one of the top 35 players in the country. The two players traded wins with Hanebury striking first with a 9-6 win. Lutz pushed Hanebury to a fifth game after picking up victories in the second (9-1) and fourth (9-3) games. Hanebury sealed the match win via a 9-5 victory in the fifth.
A year ago Lutz won the consolation bracket in his draw. He lost his opening-round match, but went on to win four in a row to take the title. Lutz returns to action on Saturday against an opponent yet to be determine in the consolation round second draw.
