Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After rallying to win the doubles point, the Maryland men's tennis team won five straight-set singles matches to post a 6-1 victory over Navy, Friday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.

Navy (4-1) quickly took a 1-0 lead in the competition for the doubles point as Nick Birger (So., Belleville, Ill.) and Jason Hill (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) recorded an 8-3 win over Maryland's (2-1) team of Alex Aksanov and Roshan Potarazu at No. 3 doubles. The score soon became 1-1 when Maryland's Boris Fetbroyt and Andrew Orban, the No. 35 duo in the country, posted an 8-4 win over Nate Nelms (Sr., St. Mary's, Ga.) and Johnny Waters (Sr., Papillion, Neb.) at No. 1 doubles.

In the decisive No. 2 doubles match, Navy's tandem of Owen Bullard (So., Concord, N.C.) and Zach Nicholson (Fr., Bowie, Md.) were serving with the score 4-3 and the Mids up a break over David Kwon and Nickolai Nielsen. The Mids managed to win just one more game over the remainder of the set, however, to allow Maryland to secure the doubles point with the 8-5 win.

"The doubles point was key tonight," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We knew we had to get off to a quick start against Maryland today. We just couldn't hold on to the lead at number two doubles. Had we done that that we would have had a lot of momentum going into the singles matches."

Navy's lone win in the singles portion of the dual came at the No. 1 flight where Nelms posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Orban.

"Nate played very well in his singles match," said Officer. "This was a good win for him. The other matches saw a number of reasonably close set scores. Maryland is nationally ranked (No. 74) and just won a 7-0 decision over Georgetown, so we knew we had our hands full coming into today."

Navy will be back on the courts Saturday for a pair of matches at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids will first play host to Villanova at 12 Noon, then will take on Howard in a 5 p.m. match.
