JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Navy men's tennis team opened its trip to Florida by dropping a 6-1 decision to Jacksonville Wednesday afternoon at the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation in Jacksonville Fla.
Each of the three doubles matches between the Mids (10-6) and the Dolphins (8-4) were determined by the score of 8-6, with the Mids recording two of those wins to claim the doubles point in the dual. Winning for Navy on the day were the No. 2 team of Nick Birger (So., Belleville, Ill.) and Jason Hill (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) along with the No. 3 tandem of Owen Bullard (So., Concord, N.C.) and Ramsey Lemaich (Jr., Danville, Calif.).
"We played very well in doubles today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Each of the matches were very competitive."
Though Navy would go on to lose each of the six singles matches, most of the matches were very close. The two matches that were extended into three sets saw Johnny Waters (Sr., Papillion, Neb.) lose a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) decision to Francisco Riveroll at No. 2 singles, and Bullard come up on the short end of a 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 contest to Jamie Esteban at No. 5 singles.
Additionally, Lemaich lost a 6-4, 7-6 match to Murilo Souza at No. 4 singles and Zach Nicholson (Fr., Bowie, Md.) was edged 6-4, 7-5 by Matt Rock at the No. 6 flight.
"Jacksonville is a talented team and they were too much for us in singles," said Officer.
The Mids remain in the Sunshine State for a Thursday morning match against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach.
