MINNEAPOLIS - Navy gymnastics team captain Adam Stanton (Sr./Centennial, Colo.) earned a spot in the NCAA Championship event prelims to highlight Navy's sixth-place performance as a team during its session in the NCAA Qualifying Meet on Thursday afternoon at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.
The Midshipmen totaled 327.0 points over the six disciplines, with their highest scores coming on the vault (58.1 points) and floor exercise (55.75 points). Top-ranked Stanford led the way with 361.1 points, followed by Michigan's 358.3 points and California's 357.55 points. Each of those three squads qualified for the NCAA Championship as a team. Penn State placed fourth with 352.15 points and Nebraska landed in fifth place with a team total of 346.8 points.
Stanton, the ECAC Senior Athlete of the Year, earned a 14.05-point score from the judges on the pommel horse to place 14th overall and earn a qualifying spot not associated with the three advancing teams or top-three all-around gymnasts. He also led the Midshipmen on the still rings with a 14.25-point performance to place 26th in the session.
Dylan Parrott (So./Rockwell, N.C.), the ECAC champion in the all-around, narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the all-around and on the floor exercise. The Navy sophomore placed ninth in the all-around with a cumulative score of 80.05 points, including a 14.95-point showing on the floor exercise for 11th place. His floor exercise performance was 0.15-point away from claiming the final slot for tomorrow.
James Godfrey (Sr./Columbia, S.C.) paced the Midshipmen in two events on Thursday. Godfrey placed 28th on the vault with a score of 14.95 points and also finished 28th on the parallel bars by virtue of his 13.4-point routine.
ECAC Rookie-of-the-Year Andrew Faulk (Fr./San Antonio, Texas) led Navy on the high bar with a 27th-place performance of 13.45 points.
Stanton will compete in the event prelims of the NCAA Championship on the pommel horse tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CT. If Stanton finishes among the top-10 gymnasts tomorrow evening, he would advance to the NCAA Championship individual event finals on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.
