Gold Shuts Out Blue, 19-0, In Annual Spring Game

April 17, 2009

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Sophomore Jon Teague booted field goals of 42 and 22 yards, while sophomores Kriss Proctor and Chris Hill scored on one-yard touchdown runs to lead the Gold over the Blue, 19-0, in the annual spring football game played Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

"Our number one goal tonight was no major injuries and we got that accomplished," said Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo. "The kids had fun and they competed a little bit."

The scrimmage lasted just 90 minutes as the two teams played 12-minute quarters instead of the usual 15 minutes and the game was played with a running clock in the second half.

Starting quarterback Ricky Dobbs led the Gold squad to two field goals in the only two drives he directed. He finished the game with 18 yards rushing on eight carries and he completed one of his four pass attempts for 11 yards. He left the game at the beginning of the second quarter with a mildly sprained ankle.

"My heart sank when he didn't get up right away," said Niumatalolo. "I was actually talking to somebody at the time and I didn't hear a word that person said. All I could see was Ricky on the ground. Fortunately it was a mild sprained ankle. He could have gone back in if it was a real game."

"Somebody fell on my ankle and I could hear it pop and I was scared at first," said Dobbs. "I thought I broke it when I first went down, but I am fine. I can still dance in the International Ball tomorrow night."

Senior slot back Bobby Doyle led the Gold offense with 43 yards rushing on three carries, while junior fullback Vince Murray added 24 yards on six carries and two catches for 13 yards.

Junior defensive end Lee Calloway paced the Gold defense with six tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble, while sophomore linebacker Caleb King recorded five tackles and a tackle for a loss. Sophomore outside linebacker Aaron McCauley, sophomore defensive end John Cabbage and senior outside linebacker Brian Smith all recovered fumbles, while sophomore nose guard Francis Archibald picked off a pass.

The Blue offense was led by sophomore quarterback/slot back Mike Stukel, who rushed for 42 yards on 18 carries. Senior fullback Kevin Campbell rushed for 20 yards on eight carries.

The Blue defense was led by senior outside linebacker Craig Schaefer, who was in on eight tackles and a tackle for a loss, while senior nose guard Nate Frazier and senior defensive end Jordan Stephens had five stops each.
