HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. -- Navy water polo senior goalkeeper Brett Rajchel was among 96 All-America selections at the United States Water Polo National Championships held earlier this summer. Rajchel, a native of Winter Park, Fla., earned All-America Honorable Mention accolades at the USA Water Polo men's championship in July for leading the Navy Aquatic Club "A" Team to a 13th-place finish.
A standout performer for Navy a year ago, Rajchel started all 31 games for the Midshipmen with 248 saves, the sixth most stops in school history. He allowed 233 goals for a stellar save percentage of .533. Rajchel recorded double-digit saves 10 different times in 2008, including in all three games of the CWPA Eastern Championship, as the Midshipmen claimed their third consecutive Eastern title. Rajchel needs just 69 saves to move into the Navy top 10 list for career saves.
Entering his senior season, he will seek to lead the Midshipmen to their fourth championship in as many years in 2009 as Navy looks to join the University of Massachusetts (1993-96) and Bucknell University (1977-80) as the only programs to capture four straight crowns.
Navy will open the regular season on Sept. 5-6, when it hosts the Navy Open. The Mids will play California on Saturday at 7:15 pm, as well as Stanford on Sunday at 3:40 pm. Both Cal and Stanford are ranked in the nation's top four, according to the preseason CWPA national poll. Navy's first game will come against Penn State Behrend on Saturday morning at 8:00 pm, and the Mids will play a total of eight games during the two days. All of Navy's games will be in Lejeune Hall and admission is free.
