HAMPTON, Va. -- Hampton held a nearly 300-point advantage in hitting percentage in handing the Navy volleyball team a three-set defeat Saturday afternoon in Hampton, Va. The Lady Pirates (2-0) defeated the Midshipmen (1-1) 25-16, 25-14, 25-18 in the title match of the Tiny L. Laster Memorial Tournament.

"We're disappointed with our performance today," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "Hampton played very well and put a lot of pressure on our passers. We struggled with our ball control today and that kept us from getting into any kind of rhythm on offense."

Hampton was able to go on sizeable runs early in each of the three sets. The Lady Pirates held a 10-9 lead in the first set before going on a 6-1 run, scored six of the first eight points of the second set and used a 6-1 run to build a 15-9 lead in what would prove to be the final set.

Hampton posted a hitting percentage of .342 in the match while limiting Navy to a mark of .067. Helping the Lady Pirates to their large advantage was their ability to drop in 14 service aces. Conversely, the Mids tallied only one service ace on the day.

Abbie Merkl (Sr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) was the lone Mid to tally a hitting percentage of over .200 on the day. The Navy team captain finished the match with six kills and one error on 12 attempts for a mark of .417. Defensively for the Mids, Holly Berger (So., Claremont, Calif.) hauled in 24 digs.

Hampton's offense was led by Aaryn Harrison and Brittany Wayne who tallied 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

Navy will next be in action Tuesday night when the Mids play host to 11th-ranked Minnesota. First serve for the match is slated for 7 p.m. in the Wesley A. Brown Field House. Admission is free for all Navy home volleyball matches this season.
