ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Marcus Rebersak (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) won both of his matches Friday to highlight the efforts by the Navy men's tennis team on the opening day of the Navy Invitational contested at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.

Altogether the Mids posted wins in two of the four doubles matches and in three of the eight singles matches played against Marist. That number had the possibility of being higher, though. In doubles, Navy's No. 3 team of Jeremy New (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.) and Jarrad Smoke (Sr., Belmar, N.J.) let a 7-4 advantage slip away in a 9-7 loss to Matt Himmelsbach and Nicolas Pisecky. Then in singles, both Zach Nicholson (So., Bowie, Md.) at No. 5 and Eddie Konrad (So., The Woodlands, Texas) at No. 6 dropped matches after having won the opening set of their respective contests.

Rebersak, meanwhile, combined with Anderson Walls (Fr., Alpharetta, Ga.) for an 8-4 win at No. 4 doubles before posting a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Marcus Von Nordheim at No. 4 singles.

"We fought hard today, but we didn't finish off matches the way we needed to," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We've had very little practice and the rust really showed out there. We need to get things going Saturday."

The Navy Invitational continues Saturday and Sunday in Annapolis. Weather permitting the matches will be played outdoors on the grounds of the USNA. The round-robin, flighted tournament continues Saturday with the Mids facing Duquesne at 9 a.m. followed by Marist taking on Temple at 2 p.m. Sunday's matches has Marist and Duquesne playing at 9 a.m. and the tournament concluding with the Navy vs. Temple match at 2 p.m.
