ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The opening weekend of play for the Navy men's tennis team came to a close Sunday with the Mids facing Temple in the concluding match of the Navy Invitational in Annapolis. The Mids picked up wins over the Owls in one doubles match and in a pair of singles matches.

"Today was a very intense, hard-fought match against two teams who will be in the mix for their respective conference titles this spring," said Navy head coach John Officer. "It was a real battle out there today. We have a real young team, but I think we grew up a lot this weekend. We played better in each of our three matches. We had some good chances to come away with wins today. We got a lot out of this weekend."

In the doubles portion of the match, Navy's No. 3 team of Mike Eisenberg (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Jeremy New (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.) posted an 8-6 win over Temple's tandem of Luv Sodha and Navy's Nicholas Gutsche (Fr., Sarasota, Fla.). In singles, Navy's Owen Bullard (Jr., Concord, N.C.) won a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Dmitry Vizhunov at No. 3 while Eddie Konrad (So., The Woolands, Texas) posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sodha at No. 6.

The Mids also had several chances to pick up some additional wins against the Owls. In doubles, Nick Birger (Jr., Belleville, Ill.) and Zach Nicholson (So., Bowie, Md.) lost their match at the No. 1 flight by the score of 8-5, while Bullard and Konrad dropped an 8-6 contest at No. 2. In singles, Marcus Rebersak (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) lost a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 match to Mansur Gishkaev at No. 4.

Navy will take several weeks off from competition before playing host to the Navy Gold Invitational Oct. 9-11.
