BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Led by Andrew Hanko's seventh-place finish, the Navy men's cross country team placed 11th at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University on Friday morning.
"Today was not our day," said head coach Al Cantello. "We had a few guys behind Hanko who got too excited and went out a little hard and paid for it in the last mile. But we will regroup."
The Mids, who are ranked fourth in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic region poll, placed 11th overall with 356 points in a field that included 42 teams and 387 runners.
Hanko continued his strong senior season, navigating the 8K course in 24:03. Last year, Hanko placed 13th at the Paul Short Run.
The second Mid to cross the finish line was junior Cody Rome, who placed 38th with a time of 24:45.
Sophomore Dean Black was Navy's third finisher with a time of 25:02 (76th place) and junior James Pearson placed 104th at 25:12.
Junior Jeremy Haney rounded out the team scoring for Navy, by coming in 131st place (25:23).
Liberty's Sam Chelanga won the individual title with a time of 23:49, followed by Virginia's Emil Heineking (23:49) and Richmond's Andrew Benford (23:52).
No. 22 Virginia won the team title with 132 points. No. 24 Georgetown placed second and William and Mary was third.
Navy's next meet will be a home dual against Army on Oct. 16.
