Navy Rifle Leads After Day One of MAC Tournament

Oct. 2, 2010

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy rifle team had a decent first day at the season-opening MAC Tournament on Saturday at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.

Complete scores were not available at the time of release.

The Mids totaled an air rifle score of 2320 and a smallbore score of 2277 for a combined 4597 on day one.

"It was not a bad start, but we are obviously capable of much more," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "I was really pleased with some of the initial performances from the plebes, in particular Steven Frazier and Karina Schmidt."

Frazier from McDonough, Ga., fired a 566 in smallbore to be included in Navy's smallbore counting team. Schmidt, a freshman from Louisville, Ky., fired a 580 in air rifle. She was not included on the counting team, but recorded the third-best score for the Midshipmen.

In smallbore, senior team captain Chris Burleson (McDonough, Ga.) led Navy with a 583. Senior Alison Lankes (Clarence, N.Y.) followed with a 573. In addition to Frazier's 566, Kenan Wang (St. Augustine, Fla.) recorded a 565.

In air rifle, Burleson fired a 584, Allison Paulson (Annville, Pa.) shot a 582, Lankes had a 580 and Wang totaled a 574.

Navy will conclude play in the MAC Tournament on Sunday, beginning at 8:00 am in the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
