Final Stats
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Colgate produced an attack percentage of .355 and recorded 20 more kills than Navy did on its way to winning the volleyball match between the two programs in three sets Saturday afternoon at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. The Raiders posted the win over the Mids by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-22.
"This was a disappointing match for us," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We played nowhere near what we are capable of. We let Colgate take control at the key moment in each of the three sets."
The score in the first set was tied at 8-8 when Colgate (12-11, 5-4 Patriot League) ran off the next seven points to take a 15-8 lead. Navy (7-18, 1-8) was able to close to within two points at 17-15, but a 3-0 run by the Raiders provided enough of a cushion for them to win the opening set.
Colgate then held a slim 10-9 lead over Navy in the second set before the Raiders scored five of the next six points to build a 15-10 advantage. The closest the Mids would get to the Raiders was four points before Colgate closed out the second set.
Navy tried to pull away from Colgate several times in the third set. First the Mids took a 17-14 lead only to see the Raiders score three-straight points, then Navy took a 22-19 lead before Colgate scored the ensuing six points to finish off the set and the match.
In addition to its .355 attack percentage, Colgate's offense also recorded 51 kills in the match. Conversely, the Mids finished the afternoon with 31 kills and a .194 hitting percentage.
No Mid reached double figures in kills in the match. Leading the Navy offense were Erin Fortner (Fr., Villa Hills, Ky.) and Nicole Salmon (Fr., Aurora, Ill.) with seven kills apiece. Additionally, Veronica Ffrench (Fr., Milton, Fla.) recorded six kills and hit .500 and Maida Kalic' (Jr., Vernon, N.Y.) tallied six kills and hit .357.
Pacing all players on the afternoon was Colgate's Maureen Colligan with 12 kills.
Navy will close out the home portion of its season Friday night when the Mids play host to American.
