ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy rifle team showed marked improvement from yesterday to today's action at the MAC Tournament, compiling a score of 4634 to defeat Akron by 70 points in Sunday's action of the MAC Tournament.
Navy totaled a 2306 in smallbore and a 2328 in air rifle for a cumulative total of 4634. The Mids improved their score by 37 points from yesterday's action (4597).
"I was really pleased with the improvement we showed from yesterday," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We had a pretty good weekend. We know it's a long year and we have a lot of room for improvement, but this was a pretty good start for us."
Navy improved by 29 points in smallbore from yesterday's score of 2277. The Mids tallied a 2306 today led by Chris Burleson's 583. Ryan Williams fired a 578, Alison Lankes scored a 577 and Kenan Wang shot a 568.
"I was pleased with Chris Burleson's 583. That is a pretty good score and to follow that with a pair of scores over 575 is a strong achievement for early in the year," said Kelley.
Navy then recorded four scores over 580 in air rifle, showing an eight-point improvement from yesterday, to shoot a 2328 today. Williams tallied a 584, Burleson shot a 583, Karina Schmidt recorded a 581 and Allison Paulson fired a 580.
"Again, I was pleased with four scores over 580 in air rifle," said Kelley. "That shows a lot of depth and consistency."
Navy will host the University of the Sciences next Saturday at 9:00 am at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
