RALEIGH, N.C. --The Navy golf team (903, +51) shot a 19-over par 304 in the final round of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate to improve its final standing by one position where it placed 15th out of 17 teams at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The Mids leapt over Francis Marion (906, +54) and nearly knocked off 14th-place VCU (902, +50), but fell short by a stroke.
The Midshipmen were led by senior Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.) who inched up the final standings from 32nd to 28th. Hayes turned in a team-low 2-over par 73 in Tuesday's final round to finish the 54-hole tournament with a 6-over par 219.
The remaining Navy players finished within a stroke a two of one another as senior Rob Merkert (Severna Park, Md.) placed 64th with a three-round mark of 229 (+16), followed by David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) in 73rd (231, +18), Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) in 77th (232, +19) and Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) in 81st (234, +21).
Trailing Duke by three strokes after the first day, the host NC State Wolfpack (844, -8) battled back to card a 1-under par 283 on Tuesday and claim the team title. The Blue Devils fell in at second with a 4-under par 848 after posting a 6-over par 290 in the final round. Wake Forest (855, +3) edged out fellow ACC foe Maryland (858, +6) for third, while East Carolina (863, +11) maintained the No. 5 position.
NC State freshman Albin Choi (207, -6) had a comfortable three-stroke advantage heading into the final round, but cooled off on Tuesday with his 1-over par 72. It was, however, good enough for medalist honors as he just nipped Wake Forest's Lee Bedford who came from 11th place to finish second with a 5-under par 208.
The Mids will play their fall finale in two weeks when they partake in the Northeast Invitational played at the Shelter Harbor Golf Club in Charlestown, R.I.
