ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Nearly 24 hours after the completion of the Service Academy Golf Classic tournament results finally surfaced and showed the Midshipmen took third place in the four-team tournament held at The Courses at Andrews Air Force Base. Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the event was trimmed to just 18 holes after heavy rain fell throughout the Washington D.C. metro area on Monday leading to unplayable conditions.
Air Force won the team crown for the 14th-consecutive year, edging out both Army and Navy by just three and six strokes, respectively. The Falcons turned in a 13-over par 373, while Army placed second with its 16-over par 376 and Navy carded a 19-over par 379. Meanwhile, the Merchant Marine Academy closed things out with a 571 (+211). Army's Anthony Kim took medalist honors thanks to his 2-under par 70, the lone player to finish under par.
Navy was led by sophomore Christopher Ceconi (Vienna, Va.) who tied for fourth with a 2-over par 74, while juniors Andrew Haines (Kirtland, Ohio) and Tyler Kuhn (Louisville, Ky.) scored a 3-over par 75 to tie for sixth. Rookie Bobby Keating (Garden City, N.Y.) placed 11th with a 5-over par 77, while Pat Collins (Floral Park, N.Y.) was a stroke behind Keating in 14th. Rounding out the scoring for the Mids were junior Collier Jones (Little Rock, Ark.) and sophomore Chris Reed (Springfield, Ohio) who each turned in a 9-over par 81 to finish tied for 19th.
Navy also sent a team to play at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate which featured 16th-ranked Duke, as well as NC State and Wake Forest who are receiving votes in the Sept. 30 Golf World / Nike Div. I Coaches' Poll. The Mids placed 15th out of 17 teams.
The Mids will play their fall finale in two weeks when they partake in The Classic at Shelter Harbor in Westerly, R.I.
