Griffin, Howell Advance to Finals of Old Dominion Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Amanda Griffin and Kourtney Howell continued their winning ways, advancing to the finals of the A1 Doubles Flight at the Old Dominion Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The duo paced a strong Navy effort that saw the Mids win at least five matches. All consolation bracket results were not available at the time of release.

"This is one of the tougher tournaments we play in. It's a good one for us to see where we are and the progress we have made," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We made some good progress, but there are some areas we could do better in. We had some matches that we let slip away. The good thing was that our effort level was tremendous."

Griffin (Sr. / Roseville, Calif.) and Howell (Fr. / Silver Spring, Md.), which entered the tournament with a 5-1 record and having won five straight matches, continued their strong season. In the quarterfinals, the pair defeated Emma Brooks and Gozde Unkaya of Drexel, 8-1. In the semifinals, the Navy duo topped Jordan Batey and Theresa Stangl of Temple, 8-5. The run ended in the finals, where the VCU duo of Ana Bara and Josefin Hjertquist defeated the Navy pair, 8-5.

"They have had a tremendous fall and continue to impress. They actually played a really strong final," said Puryear. "It was a high quality match that really came down to some key points."

Navy will continue play on Saturday with the beginning of singles play.
