ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Marcus Rebersak (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) continued his strong fall campaign by recording a straight-set singles victory for the Navy men's tennis team Saturday at the Navy Gold Invitational held at the USNA Tennis Courts in Annapolis, Md.
Rebersak posted a 7-5, 6-4 victory over George Washington's Christopher Kushma at No. 2 singles. In addition to it being his fifth win in as many matches this season, it also was his fourth straight-set victory of the fall campaign. Rebersak entered this year having posted only a trio of fall singles victories over the course of his first two seasons at Navy.
His win Saturday was one of just two on the day for the Mids against the Colonials. The lone other victory for Navy was a win by its No. 4 doubles team of Eddie Konrad (Jr., The Woodlands, Texas) and Zach Nicholson (Jr., Bowie, Md.). The duo had posted an 8-2 victory over the tandem of Andy Erickson and Ken Mkrtchian.
The Mids did give themselves several other chances to tally wins on the day. Navy's No. 3 doubles team of Rebersak and Jeremy New (Sr., Glen Allen, Va.) lost in a tiebreaker by the score of 7-4 to Richard Blumenfeld and Yan Levinski, and Owen Bullard (Sr., Concord, N.C.) dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Alexander van Gils at No. 1 singles.
"The issue for us today was our inability to finish out games and sets," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We did a nice job of creating opportunities to do so, but we struggled with being to take advantage of them.
"We faced a very good George Washington team today. I think they could be ranked among the top-60 teams in the country."
The Navy Gold Invitational will conclude Sunday with UMBC facing George Washington at 9 a.m. and Navy taking on Georgetown at 2 p.m.
