Philadelphia - All three Navy rowing teams combined for a total of six first-place finishes on Saturday at the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia. It was the second action of the year for the Navy heavyweight and lightweight teams while it was the first action of the fall for the women's team.

Competing in a total of five races on Saturday, the Navy heavyweight team had boats place in the top two spots in four of the five events.

"Overall, I think it was the best Navy Day Regatta we've had," said heavyweight coach Rick Clothier. "To go 1-2 in every event was great."

The heavyweight squad started the day by taking the top-two spots in the collegiate four with times of 14:04.47 and 14:20.76. In the collegiate novice four, the Mids also grabbed first and second place with times of 14:44.24 and 14:45.72.

Both the heavyweight and lightweight teams had two boats entered in the collegiate/frosh novice eight and the two combined to take four of the top-five spots. The lightweight team took the third and fourth spots, while the heavyweight boats took the first and fifth places.

In the second varsity eight, the heavyweights finished in first and second with the top boat turning in a time of 13:02.98.

In the open/collegiate varsity eight race - the final race of the day for the heavyweights - the Mids finished second by just under five seconds behind club team Penn AC.

The men's lightweight team had four teams entered in the collegiate four and all four finished in the top four spots. The top performing boat in the race turned in a time of 14:39.96.

In one of the tightest races of the day, the Navy lightweights just beat out Delaware in the collegiate eight. The Mids' first boat crossed the finish line with a time of 12:41.16 - edging Delaware by just .45.

The Navy women competed in just two races on Saturday. In their first race of the day, the Mids took second in the collegiate JV eight with a time of 15:11.23. In the only other race for the women, the Mids took third with a time of 14:59.44 in the open/collegiate eight.

"It's early in the season and it was good to compete against good Division I and Eastern Sprint teams," said women's head coach Mike Hughes. "It was a solid first race of the season but we still have a lot of work to do."

All three teams will return to action at the Head of the Charles on Oct. 24.
