Final Stats
EASTON, Pa. -- After rallying to win the fourth set, Lafayette scored the final four points of the fifth set to defeat the Navy volleyball team Friday night in Easton, Pa. The Leopards defeated the Mids by set scores of 22-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-23, 15-12.
Navy has now lost a trio of road Patriot League matches in five sets this season. In addition to tonight's 15-12 loss to Lafayette, the Mids have also lost in the fifth set by scores of 17-15 at Bucknell and 15-13 at Holy Cross.
"Closing out opponents, especially on the road, has been a problem for us," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We have worked hard to place ourselves in good position during each of these close sets and match, but each time we have left the door open just enough for teams like Lafayette to come through and catch us in the end."
Navy (7-22, 1-12 Patriot League) held a slim 12-11 lead late in the fifth set following an attack error by Lafayette's (5-22, 1-12) Sarah Frohnapfel, but she promptly fed Kayly Elmer for back-to-back kills to tie the score for the 10th time in the set and then give the Leopards a 13-12 lead. Alana Taylor would notch an unassisted kill to take Lafayette to match point, which it converted when Taylor and Alexandra Russo teamed up for a block of Veronica Ffrench (Fr., Milton, Fla.).
Navy hit a match-low .091 in the fifth set, while Lafayette hit a match-high .412 in the set. That disparity allowed the Leopards to outhit the Mids in the match by a count of .222-.187.
Lauren Carpenter (Jr., Murphy, Texas) posted a career-high 12 kills to lead the Navy offense. She was joined in double figures by teammates Ffrench with 11 kills and Erin Fortner (Fr., Villa Hills, Ky.) with 10 kills. Carpenter also added 10 digs to allow her to record her second double-double of the year. Leading all Navy passers was Holly Berger (Jr., Claremont, Calif.) with 22 digs, while Kaitlin Roseti (Jr., Williamsville, N.Y.) recorded seven blocks.
Elmer's 16 kills paced all players in the match.
Navy will close its season Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Mids play at Lehigh.
