ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team improved to 3-0 on the season with two wins at the Navy Invitational on Saturday. Navy, ranked No. 19, defeated Georgetown, 9-0 and North Carolina, 9-0.
Senior Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) earned a hard-fought win over Georgetown's Nigel Anthony at the No. 1 spot, 11-4, 14-12, 11-2 and freshman Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) continued remained unbeaten as a collegiate player, beating Pat Trousdale, 11-5, 11-5, 11-4, at No. 2.
The sophomore trio of John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.), Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) and Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) all earned wins in slots 3-5, respectively. Richey defeated Chris Ahn, 11-8, 11-4, 11-5, Abrams beat Rob Moore, 11-7, 11-7, 11-1 and Bouchard knocked off Devin Moore, 11-2, 11-2, 11-2.
Senior Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y) had the toughest test of the day at No. 6. McNamara dropped his first game to Oscar Neubauer, 8-11, but rallied to take the next three sets, 11-4, 11-6, 11-4, to earn a 3-1 win.
"Georgetown is a much improved team this year," said head coach Craig Dawson. "It was a competitive match."
Navy made quick work of North Carolina, defeating the Tar Heels, 9-0. Seven Mids defeated their opponents and Navy's No. 8 and No. 9 players earned victories by default.
At No. 1, Lutz picked up his 76th career win with an 11-5, 11-0, 11-3 win over Rees Sweeney-Taylor.
Richey moved up to the No. 2 spot and posted a win over Thomas Lane, 11-5, 11-0, 11-5. Senior and team captain Brad Seidel was victorious at No. 3, defeating Prateek Peres-da-Silva, 11-3, 11-0, 11-1.
McNamara picked up his second win of the day while playing at sophomore David Koenig (Cincinnati, Ohio) saw his first action of the season, beating Andrew Beard, 11-4, 11-2, 11-2 at No. 5.
Sophomore Clayton Young also picked up his first win of the year at No. 6 and freshman Emile Toscano claimed a win over Max Harris, 11-4, 11-3, 11-3. Earlier in the day, Toscano earned his first career win at No. 9 against Georgetown.
The Mids will wrap up play in the Navy Invitational with a match against Vanderbilt at 10:00 am Sunday.
