ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 13th-ranked Navy squash team closed out "opening weekend" by scoring a 9-0 victory over Vanderbilt Sunday morning at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts. The Midshipmen also earned 9-0 wins over Virginia, Georgetown and North Carolina to improve to 4-0 after the first weekend of action.
"We gave a few guys at the top of the ladder this match off and the rest of the team filled in quite nicely," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "I was pleased with our effort throughout the weekend and look forward to hosting another tournament next weekend."
Giving Navy's top player Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) a well-earned breather, rookie Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) occupied the No. 1 spot on the ladder in what was just his third match of his career where he took down junior Zachary Hoyt, 11-2, 11-8, 11-3.
Sophomore Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) pushed up to the No. 2 slot where he downed Dylan Tracy, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4, while classmate Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) claimed an 11-5, 11-2, 11-2 win over Vandy's Austin Schiff.
Team captain Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) and junior John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.) secured the fourth and fifth positions on the ladder by way of wins over Amos Kendall and Thomas Matthews, respectively, in three games.
Second-year standout David Koenig (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up an 11-5, 11-2, 11-4 win over Sam Bogrov at No. 6, while senior Aidan Crofton (Laverock, Pa.) was the lone player to hold his opponent scoreless in a game behind an 11-0, 11-5, 11-2 victory at No. 7.
Rounding out the morning's action was freshman Emile Toscano (Chapel Hill, N.C.), who scored an 11-1, 11-2, 11-3 win over Baltimore, Md., native Grady Kidder of Vanderbilt, while Clayton Young (River Forest, Ill.) won by default.
