• 2010 Southern Scuffle - Day 1 Results
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Six of Navy's 20 tournament entrants remain alive after day one of the two-day Southern Scuffle held at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center, including 157-pound Bryce Saddoris (Sr., Spring Creek, Nev.) and 184-pound Luke Rebertus (Jr., Gloucester, Va.), who both advanced in the championship side of the bracket.
The Mids tallied 38 points to close out the day's action in seventh place, just one point ahead of Hofstra, who has seven remaining wrestlers in the competition, and 5.5 points behind third-ranked Minnesota, who has eight wrestlers on the championship side of the bracket and one in consolations.
Both Saddoris and Rebertus continued what has been an outstanding season to date for each wrestler. Saddoris, seeded No. 2 and ranked seventh nationally by Intermat, opened up the tournament with a pair of convincing victories over UNC Greensobor's Matt Barbo (Fall - 1:28 and Shawn Harris of Virginia (8-1). He then punched his way into the 157-pound quarterfinals by turning in a hard-fought 8-6 win over George Mason's Jaaziah Bethea.
Saddoris, who pushed his season record to 21-2, will get an early look at what will likely be his foe in the annual Army-Navy Star Match when he battles the Black Knights' James Rafferty, a junior, in the quarters. With Army saddled back in 21st among the 34 teams in action, Rafferty is the lone Black Knight still on the championship side of the bracket.
Saddoris placed seventh at 149 pounds as a freshman, second at 149 pounds his sophomore season behind NC State's Darrion Caldwell who went on to win the National Championship and a year ago clipped Bloomsburg's Matt Moley, 3-2, to place third.
Rebertus, meanwhile, will face fifth-seeded and 17th-ranked Jonathan Fausey of Virginia in Thursday's 184-pound quarters. Ranked 15th and seeded fourth, Rebertus pinned Anthony Gardner of UNC Greensboro in his first match of the tournament and followed upw ith a 7-2 win over Joshua Mohr of Air Force. The Navy junior now stands at 17-3 this season.
In addition to Saddoris and Rebertus, Aaron Kalil (Salem, N.H.)l at 125 pounds, Mason Bailey (Fairmont, W.Va.) at 165 pounds, Oscar Huntley (Stafford, Va.) at 174 pounds and Chance Rauscher (Glasgow, Mont.) at 197 pounds also remain alive in the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes.
